Choosing the Right Speaking Topic

One of the most common questions I receive from clients and audiences is, “What should I speak about?” When I dig a little deeper what they really want to know is, “What topics are hot?”

It’s a valid question but not the one they should be focused on. See if you choose your topic based on what’s popular or the business flavor of the moment, you may be setting yourself up for frustration and failure.

Instead, start the process of choosing your topic by asking yourself this question, “What topic can I present that will motivate my ideal audience to sign up for what I’m offering?”

This nugget of wisdom might leave you pondering a few things:

  1. Who is my ideal audience? If you’ve never figured this out, it’s time. If you market your talk to everyone you’re really marketing to no one. The best way to get booked to speak and to bring in droves of clients when you speak is to target your talk to a specific group or groups of people. For example, my 3 groups are Financial Advisors. Insurance Agents, and Experts (authors, speakers, consultants). Narrowing it down like this has dramatically increased my bookings and the number of clients I serve.
  2. What am I offering? Once your talk is over (remember no one will get all they need from you in a 60 or 90 min talk, to truly help them they need more from you) what next steps will you offer your ideal audience to take with you? Will you offer time with you, a specific program they can enroll in, a product, etc.?

If you don’t know the answer to the questions above it’s very hard to zero in on a topic that will get you the results you’re looking for. So, if you’re willing, before you put pen to paper or fingertips to keyboard do yourself and all those people in your future audiences a favor..set aside time to figure this out. Once you do you’ll be one step closer to being Crazy Good!
